EVERYBODY EATS IS ABOUT MORE THAN FOOD.
Hunger does not exist in a vacuum.
Families who are experiencing food insecurity consistently experience higher rates of housing insecurity, lack of access to healthcare, and other basic needs. We created the Everybody Eats series to provide healthy and nutritious food, housing resources, and healthcare access to low income communities across the United States. EVR does this through resource fairs, strategic partnerships, and grassroots community organizing that allows us to work with community leaders and national partners to create sustainable structures that continually supply basic needs to the communities we support.
STRUCTURAL BARRIERS THAT EXACERBATE LACK OF ACCESS TO BASIC NEEDS IN BLACK AND BROWN COMMUNITIES:
-
From the data report, The Color of Justice: Racial and Ethnic Disparity in State Prisons. Black men are six times as likely to be incarcerated as white men and Latinx men are 2.5 times as likely. Nationally, one in 81 Black adults in the United States is serving time in state prison.”Incarceration often results in job loss and debt from court costs making it difficult to afford nutritious food, housing, and other basic needs upon release.
-
Historic and current housing discrimination practices perpetuate areas of concentrated poverty in Black and Brown communities. Underfunded schools, poor employment opportunities, and over-policing create barriers that exacerbate generational poverty and make it difficult to afford basic needs.
-
A wage gap persists in the United States as Black and Brown people (especially women) make significantly less than their white counterparts. Additionally, discrimination in hiring practices limits opportunities for people of color. Lower wages and less job opportunities make it more difficult to afford basic necessities for individuals and families.
FOOD INSECURITY IS...
a lack of consistent access to enough nutritious and safe food for an active and healthy life. Food insecurity is hunger and impacts people across the United States. It is a solvable problem that we must work together to address.

HOUSING INSECURITY IS…
Lack of access to stable housing because of barriers such as high rent prices, low wages, high interest rates, discrimination, etc.

HEALTH INEQUITY IS…
A lack of access to affordable healthcare and a disproportionate risk of developing diseases and illnesses because of systemic issues such as environmental racism, lack of access to nutritious food, and limited access to healthcare providers of Color.
